Collecting The Spoils is a Sunless Skies Story Event.
Story description[ | ]
Miners speak of a geode containing a whole century's worth of Hours, so big that it had to be dragged away by locomotive. Your crew have not found anything like that. Without a factory full of equipment, the most you can realistically hope for is a fine bounty of Unseasoned Hours. They sit in nervous silence as you examine their efforts.

The foreman has good news
"Captain! We hit the motherlode!"
|
|
So many barrels!
The mining crew wipes their foreheads. They only just finished gathering enough wax to forge the Ministry's seal. Where they got it, they prefer not to answer.
|
Reward the crew
A shiny Sovereign for everyone!
|
The crew happily takes the extra money. It may not be much, but the unexpected bonus warms their hearts after all their hard work.

Reward yourself
Clearly, this was all down to your judgement.
|
With a handful of fresh hours, you treat yourself to the height of Lustrum luxuries. A good meal. A whole scone at Murgatroyd's, with extra jam. A piping hot bath at the town's one remaining bathhouse. Finally, a victorious strut through the shantytown of fellow prospectors, now that enough time has passed for your good fortune to be properly reported. Savour the sharp looks.

Nod approvingly
You expected no less.
|
The crew seems a little deflated. They load the Hours onto the train in silence. The braver risk a glare, muttering something about not being able to afford a celebratory drink.

The foreman has terrible news
"It's those Windward b_____ds, Captain. You'd better come see."
|
|
A brutal scene
"B_____ds came from nowhere. Windward's neddy-men, with their sticks and rope. Fought back, Cap'n. Fought like hell, but... not everyone made it."
The foreman surveys what remains of the mining site. "B_____ds," he confirms, kicking aside a broken pickaxe handle. "Come on. Show you what we salvaged. But I'm out of the game. Need better work than mining or skyfaring. Something safer."

The foreman has bad news
"Sorry, Cap'n. It's a mighty poor harvest."
|
|
A poor harvest indeed
The crew looks worried. A sign of their laziness, or just a poor choice of claim on your part? Either way, these desultory hours will have to do for now.

The foreman comes to greet you
"Nothing much to report, Cap'n. Ready to start loading up the barrels when you are."
|
|
Barrels of hours
The barrels of Hours are carefully loaded onto a cart to be transferred to the train. Each is encased with beeswax, or the closest available substitute, to prevent any leakage. A stamp on the top marks them as officially approved by the Ministry, as long as nobody looks too closely at the finer detail.
